Exploring nucleic acid chemistry at the dawn of life
“Designing and regulating biological system through chemical principles”
Our laboratory integrates organic chemistry, chemical biology, and immunology to investigate biological systems at the molecular level and to develop innovative strategies for their precise modulation. In particular, we develop functional biomolecules based on nucleic acid systems to visualize, control, and harness complex biological processes, with a focus on molecular recognition, immune regulation, and dynamic biomolecular interactions.
We are also interested in nucleic acid–based catalysts as models for primitive enzymes, alternative nucleic acid structures such as Z-helices that emerge under diverse physicochemical environments, and the interactions of nucleic acids with metals, peptides, and small molecules. By bridging molecular-level chemistry with complex chemical systems, we aim to uncover the chemical principles underlying biological complexity, the emergence of functional molecular networks, and ultimately the origins and evolution of life.
